so i was surfing youtube in my general state of procrastination when i came across the work of Phil Hansen. His work seems to bend towards the common trend of mixed media and digital tiling, and most of it is political in nature (yeah i know), but i saw some grains of... well... coolness there. so i said "hey what the heck i still have seven hours til my paper is due, lets procrastislack some more" and went to his web page, www.philinthecircle.com . it wasn't til i arrived here that i figured out this guy was pretty awesome. x-ray tech by day, artist by night, or something like that.
Trying to ignore the fact that his bio hits a bit too close to home i forged on. anyways he did this 'influence' piece that was completely original, and rather insightful. some of his images seemed a bit contrived, like a flower, or a little dog, but for the most part they seemed like good, somewhat personal things, with touches of controversy. also most of the images, but not all, were recognizable icons. This was an excellent self portrait. But wait there's more. What i really appreciated was the silhouette cutout afterward of the painted layers, and on his web page there is a picture of the rolled up layers. it really drives home the point. now it could be the sleep deprivation talking, but i think this guy has something.

In short I've bookmarked the page, and intend to check it out sometime in the future as i hope all of my avid readers *stifled laughter* will do as well.

much love to all, -rachel-

first of all i would like to say thank you to all of you who called me today to make sure i hadn't been torn limb from limb by a tornado (a direct quote btw). Thanks, i apreciate it. All the tornado action was much farther south than Chapel Hill, so i am A-ok.

On another note it looks alot like i will be in town for thanksgiving. It knida sucks, and kinda doesnt. I have alot of things to get done, but I would like to be able to be home with my family for this time. I've decided not to whine about it, and instead im just gonna role with the punches and see where i end up.

The only other comment for the day.... The sacred halls of books and learning are called LIBRARIES. notice the spelling it is not li-berry. If you pronounce it liberry you need to go get yo-self some o' that good ole book learnin. Special shame on the college students. geez.

P.S. Much love to my muffin.

P.P.S. If you think you are my muffin, but you aren't sure of it, then you aren't but i probably send love your way anyway.

happiness and joy to all -rachel-

It seems like every day some country is suing an American museum or institution over the return of some artwork or antiquities which may have made their way to the US through either shady means or even forgotten formal agreements. And now Bloomberg reports that the government of Peru plans to sue Yale University, over hundreds of artifacts taken from the ancient city of Machu Picchu nearly a century ago. And this may be the straw that breaks the camel's back (or in this case the llama's back). The artifacts made their way to the US through Yale archeologist Hiram Bingham. One side claims that the artifacts were on loan. Yale contends the artifacts were legally excavated and exported "in line with the practices of the time." And if these artifacts were sent to the US through some agreement with the Peruvian government nearly a century ago, then Yale has a case for keeping them; otherwise -- in the event that the American archeologists simply found them, crated them and shipped them to the US - all on their own -- then today's courts may well rule in Peru's favor. And that straw that may break the camel's back may also unlock Pandora's box (which Greece will soon be suing for).

First: let's get one thing clear: Nazi art loot should and must be returned to their original owners or descendants. But for most of all the other demanding of artwork returns: where does it stop? Because unless you have some official paperwork signed, stamped and approved (and recognized as valid) then...

Does every Roman artifact in museums around the world have to be returned to Italy? And do Italian museums have to return Roman antiquities that were made in other parts of the Roman Empire to the nations that now exist there? And Italy better start packing the 13 Egyptian obelisks that are all over Rome: Cairo is clearing out some spaces for them. Every Greecian urn back to Greece? But do Greek museums have to return Cypriot antiquities to Cyprus? Does every mummy have to find its way back to Egypt? That "official" cadaver of Christopher Columbus in the Havana Cathedral? Sorry... back to Spain; or is it Italy, or Portugal? All three of those nations currently claim him as a native son, although I suspect that the Grand Admiral's descendants, currently living in Spain, have first dibs on Chris' bones. And the fake Columbus cadaver in the Seville Cathedral? Back to Genoa, even if it's fake (just in case).

After all, that fake Scottish Stone of Destiny has made its way back to Scotland (God only knows where the real one is), but there are probably hundreds of thousands of antiquities (if not millions) from all over the world disseminated... all over the world. Our own Smithsonian has over 100,000 pre-Columbian antiquities in its inventory (most of which are not even on display). Do the ones that were created by pre-Columbian artisans from north and south of our border have to be returned to the countries that now exist there?

Unless these museums have a provenance with lots of country of origin stamps authorizing the removal of the antiquity, I'd be pretty nervous if I was one of those museums. And even if you have such a paper, what's to stop today's version of a country's government from saying that they do not recognize the authority of their predecessors to allow the removal of a national treasure from their nation. And where does it stop?

Frida Kahlo was essentially ignored by Mexico while she was alive, and yet decades after her death she was deified outside of Mexico, and eventually the government of Mexico made her works a national treasure and forbade the export of any of Kahlo's works from Mexico. I think that this is a good (if late) thing for Mexico and Mexicans. But what's to stop a future Mexican government from demanding the return of any and all Frida Kahlos outside of Mexico back to her mother nation. It would just be a case of this "return" trend being pushed a little more.

Personally, I think that from now on, when I visit foreign museums, I will be making a list of American Indian artifacts in those museums, and they better damned have a piece of paper somewhere full of stamps and signatures from the Sioux, or the Walla Walla, or the Cheyenne, or the Seminoles or the Oneida or whatever indigenous Native American nation that currenly lives in the USA created them. Official export paperwork from the United States government is not valid, and will not be accepted, regardless of how many non-Indian Washington, DC officials have signed it.

Of course, that may also mean that every non-Indian museum in the USA itself, would have to return every Native American Indian artifact back to their tribes.

Makes my head hurt...

The Keys to Your Heart

You are attracted to good manners, good bodies, and deep thinkers.

In love, you feel the most alive when things are straight-forward, and you're told that you're loved.

You'd like to your lover to think you are optimistic and happy.

You would be forced to break up with someone who was arrogant, acting like the dictator of your life.

Your ideal relationship is comforting. You crave a relationship where you always feel warmth and love.

Your risk of cheating is zero. You care about society and morality. You would never break a commitment.

You think of marriage something you've always wanted... though you haven't really thought about it.

In this moment, you think of love as commitment. Love only works when both people are totally devoted.

Well now i am officially 21... wow. My day yesterday was awesome, starting with pink champagne and ending with a beautifully gorey chick flick *sigh*. It was fantastic, everything was fantastic. Oh yes, I almost forgot. It didn't start with champagne. the first thing to happen was the fulfillment of my birthday curse. Ahh the curse of Rachel. Every year on my birthday since my 13th birthday there has been a power outage of some kind. yes its true, and yes i know no one believes me. In any case just after midnight there was a huge booming thunder storm and the power was out in my house til about 9am. So my champagne experience was by scented candlelight. It would have been the most fantastically romantic moment of my entire life (yes trouncing the fireworks in chattanooga) had it not been with a friend. I adore all of my gifts, i love all of my friends who were sweet enough to think of me yesterday, mad props to you all. The only downer is that i dont think my party is going off tonight. For reasons beyond my control, my house mate, aka the owner of the house is back for the weekend, so this year im low key. However to all of you people out there who were relying on me for fun and alcohol i promise to make it up to you, probably over spring break if i dont go anywhere.

oh yeah, random comment. Last night at walmart (don't even ask why I was at walmart on my birthday, its my day, i do what i want) i saw the single most fabulous bracelet i've seen in a while. Its stirling silver with these blue daisy chain flowers, probably sapphires, or a knockoff, i dunno, but it called to me. first chance i get im running back there and buying it as a personal present. I tell this story as advice to you all. If you find an inanimate object that actually induces happy feelings, go ahead and indulge yourself. lol. I fully intend to buy it and wear it every...single...day..... oh yeah, its that pretty. This is me signing off, and wishing all a happy day. -rachel-

OK so why is it that all at once, in one twenty four hour period all the men, and i do mean all of them, in my life decide to gang up on me and try to make me feel as horrific as possible? i mean if you add it all together evidently i am a;
Worthless, usless, lazy, slutty, self centered bitch of an alcoholic woman.

That does not give me the warm fuzzies. I would like to say that i think all of you Y chromasome carriers need to go reevaluate why you are pressing all this on me. I know i am not worthless, i certainly do not even resemble lazy. None of my professors or other fencers seem to think im usless, i am not a slut, dont ever call me a bitch or ill redefine the word for you, and i'm not even certain ive finished a drink in the last four months. You all suck

on the upside i found a dollar, danny has invited me to the ATO frat party tomorrow night and says if i get there by ten, and save him a dance he'll work it so i can play with them *yay*. PPl at the DMV may suck, but I'll get my way by this friday, just wait and see. Until then this is me saying dont mess with my head, or I'll cut yours off.
